The Exmoor Character Cottages team is highly motivated to provide our guests with an exceptional experience at every stage of their stay. For this reason, we have in recent years turned to industry professionals whose invaluable mentoring helps us navigate this rapidly changing new world.
Indeed, the Coronavirus pandemic has challenged the hospitality sector, with regulatory and compliance changes landing daily and resulting in a blizzard of information. To best wade through the detail, Exmoor Character Cottages has maintained our partnership with a leading compliance expert. However, we have more recently turned to the Professional Association of Self Caterers (PASC) for advice. As a result, we were proud to welcome Alistair Handyside MBE, Executive Chair of PASC into our virtual studio to launch our 2022 podcast series.
What is PASC?
PASC is the only association dedicated to lobbying for the professional self-catering sector throughout the UK. From our perspective, PASC provides invaluable advice on all sorts of pandemic related topics and continues to support our industry as regulatory changes cascade from the central government.
Alistair Handyside – a leading figure in quality hospitality
Quality and professionalism are words which run through Alistair like a stick of rock! With almost 20 of years’ experience in running his own high end self-catering business, Alistair is in a unique position to lobby in the corridors of power with real-life, hands-on experience.
The reality of running a self-catering business
Guest delight is front and centre of everything we do. During the pandemic, many of us were uncertain what the future would look like and when people would feel comfortable to leave their homes for a holiday.
Empowered with information from PASC, we were able to plan, go above and beyond the protocols set by the government, and get ahead of the curve. For this reason, we opened our doors (and our hot tubs) at the first possible (legal) opportunity.
Our loyal guests love what we are doing
We’ll never forget the look on the guests’ faces as they arrived at our cottages after lockdown. Time and time again, our guests remark on the cleanliness of our accommodation and the quality of services we offer. Great reviews and guest book feedback reinforce this week in, week out.
Looking to the future – ‘Clean and Green’ supported by new technology
As Alistair says, self-catering accommodation offers the very best value holiday on a per person or per family basis. In an economic climate of double-digit inflation on everyday items and fuel, all quality providers will come under pressure this year to either cut costs or increase rates.
Our view is that all PASC hygiene protocols will remain in place for ever, and we are committed to being a clean and green Exmoor business now and into the future. We will also investigate further enhancements to our guest experience, including:
- Providing EV charging points at our Minehead cottages
- Providing fast and reliable Wi-Fi via BT Business Broadband to enable working and streaming
- Offering special experiences and activities tailored to our youngest guests
