“Happy Holidays! What a lovely holiday home! Great location. Beautiful views. Stunning inside and out. Perfect finishing touches. We will be back.”

“After a 14-week lockdown, it was a brave decision to come away and stay in another house. But we couldn’t have felt more welcome, comfortable and confident in such a clean and hygienic property. Lucy has gone to exceptional lengths to ensure her holiday home meets all of the COVID standards. We have been totally relaxed in this home-from-home – we will definitely be back!

“Our first time staying at The Oval has been full of fun and enjoyment. We love the cottage, its long history, character and reassuring cleanliness! Very well-equipped, and ideally situated as a base for Dunster and Exmoor. We look forward to returning to The Oval next year.”

"The handmade facemasks as part of the welcome tray were a great personal touch, as were the traditional hanging labels to indicate that rooms and crockery had all been cleaned to the new standard that we had been advised of – and reassured by - before our arrival. There is definitely a new mindset that each and every one of us now has to the hygiene for ourselves and others, but nothing about the new-normal detracted from our stay.”

“Wow what a stunning cottage! Beautiful cottage and great having a hot tub too. Plus it’s the little extras too, like cake and even treats for the dog. Lucy was great even when my husband lost the keys, only to find the dog was sitting on them in the car. Weather has been kind to us too, so all in all we’ve had a great week. Would love to return here again.”

“Really lovely cottage, the little touches were very thoughtful. With a seven year old we did the inflatable family fun board/raft experience from Channel Adventures – this was a great socially distanced activity. We also visited the steam train museum day and the Cliff Railway in Lynmouth. On the way back from Lynton we took the toll road, which had amazing views. We also visited Lyn Candles which you recommended. Thank you!"

“We were the first visitors after lockdown restrictions eased. It was slightly strange to be out of our house at last, be we couldn’t have chosen a better place to re-energise. We had a lovely week exploring the area and enjoying the comfort of The Oval. The walking tips in ‘The Little Book of Walks’ were very helpful. We hope to return one day.

“This was our third visit to Pilgrim Corner, and it has been as wonderful as ever. The attention to detail is always brilliant and the team has done a great job with all the COVID cleaning and prep. Thanks for the cake – we loved the hot tub!”

“The Old Sweet Shop is absolutely amazing and wonderful. The attention to detail and the quality is 100% +++. A well-stocked kitchen, everything you could need is here, superb. All the rooms have a wow factor to them = excellent. The lovely welcoming touches were really appreciated. The garden areas are beautiful, and the hot tub was spot on. All in all a truly remarkable week away in a fantastic, well-maintained cottage, with lovely decoration and in a wonderful area. Many thanks to Lucy, Steve and the team. 100% customer service. 100% customer satisfaction.”

“Thank you to Lucy and her team! We have had a lovely relaxing time in this beautiful barn. It was just what we needed after lockdown. The beds were super-comfy, and the cottage is exceptionally clean. Our dog has enjoyed the garden. Thanks to Steve for keeping the hot tub clean and all the tips about places to visit. The brownie cake, milk etc on arrival were a lovely touch, thankyou (the brownie didn’t last long!). We would love to visit again.”

“Thank you to all at Exmoor Character Cottages for a superb stay. This was our first stay in Dunster, and the surrounding areas and it was superb. The Oval was a perfect break for us and Archie the dog, with its period features and modern tech. We loved our stay, we loved The Oval, we loved the village and Exmoor is a pure delight – we cannot recommend it highly enough. Thank you, Lucy and team, we will see you very soon.”

“Thank you for the beautiful welcome cake – what a treat! As always, ‘The Oval’ was a delight to stay in, and even more beautiful at Christmas time. We are so fortunate to have moved our holiday from March to now – it has been a welcome break from the turbulent year we are all having. Fab weather, wonderful walks, roaring fires, good food, books, a little piece of heaven on earth – thank you to all the team for the incredible effort you have put in, we could not have felt more welcomed. May next year to be kinder to us all.”

We love Exmoor. It’s a beautiful and often overlooked part of the country. As a guest once wrote in a Visitors’ Book: “We asked ourselves why we had driven past Somerset for years when everything we wanted and more was here.” READ MORE

How much do you know about local history?
The Oval Dunster boasts original cruck beams, oak screening, a stunning four-poster bed, wood-burning stove, stone floors and many more fascinating features.
For instance, it is thrilling to explore and find marks on the wood panelling made by the carpenters so long ago, or sleep in the stately four-poster, just like Henry VIII.
In fact, Channel 4’s Time-Team has dendro-dated the cruck beams in the main bedroom to the winter of 1366.
Finally, in case you were wondering, The Oval’s name does not pertain to cricket – it’s a corruption of the word ‘hovel’, which was used for any house in past times.
