4×4 safaris on the moor

Meet the Exmoor Pony
The Exmoor pony is a unique and cherished breed that reached Britain about 130 thousand years ago and still roams the moorlands today. Once used in the local mines and as pack ponies to pull delivery carts, they now spend their days grazing, which acts as a form of conservation on Exmoor. On the safari you may spot these shy animals in their natural habitat, in summer with a glossy coat, and in winter with a thick, two-layered protective covering.
Be mesmerised by Red Deer
On safari there’s a good chance of seeing some of Exmoor’s 3,000 or so Red Deer, the largest surviving land mammals in Britain. Daphne knows all the places to have the best chance of seeing them whatever the time of year, and her Defender is equipped to travel even the roughest of tracks.
Flowers, plants and the natural habitat
During your trip you will enjoy some stunning scenery, depending on the weather of course! The diverse habitats of the Exmoor National Park produce a great variety of plant life. On the trip you will see a range of plants from the bell heather of the drier moorland to the great woodrush of the rocky River Valleys. We saw some fabulous bright red and orange mushrooms on our trip.
Daphne reminds every group that “Each tour is different – we never know what we will see.” So, the sights and sounds of your safari will really depend on the time of year and day – and a bit of luck too when it comes to deer. Daphne will pick you up at a pre-arranged time from one of our cottages and drop you back. All you need is suitable clothing and footwear – and a pair of binoculars! Winter Wildlife Safaris are available on selected dates and subject to availability.
Contact Daphne at www.exmoorwildlifesafaris.com or on 07977 571494 for availability, prices and to book. Remember to say you are staying with Exmoor Character Cottages (“Lucy’s cottages”) for your free collection and drop off.
Please let the organiser know you are staying with us when booking. You will need to book with and pay the organiser direct as your service is supplied by them. All of these activities are provided by the third-party supplier, not by us, and where relevant you are covered by the supplier’s insurance.
