Cooking Weekend Getaway – Your ‘Demo & Dine’ Holiday
Brilliant bread, perfect pasta, fabulous fish or scrummy sweet treats – learn the skills from our resident Chef Ben during an indulgent cooking weekend getaway!
Why not do something different on your break and embrace a foodie holiday? Develop new culinary skills and learn some great chef hacks from our very own chef Ben, all in the comfort of your Exmoor Character Cottage. You’ll definitely impress your friends and family when you serve your own baked bread and churned butter, cured salmon and homemade pasta. Not to mention presenting a beautiful platter with a delicious dessert.
Centre your cooking weekend getaway around these half day workshops, which Ben has designed exclusively for guests of Exmoor Character Cottages. He’ll bring the local ingredients and tutor you throughout. So, roll up your sleeves, put your apron on and get ready to cook! Take a morning or afternoon out from your stay to get creative in our beautiful country kitchens!
Ben has been cooking professionally level since the age 15, when he started working in his family’s kitchens. He founded his business Thir13en with his partner Isabella just before the 2020 lockdowns, having realised that people were increasingly asking for high-quality food, cooked and served in their own homes. These ‘demo and dine’ options are the perfect way for you to learn some new culinary skills and then enjoy what you’ve made with your party!
Brilliant bread & butter
Bake your own bread, choosing from a variety of favourite flavours such as sourdough, focaccia, spiced white, wholegrain and soda bread. Ben’s half day workshop covers the entire process of bread making. Learn the secrets to kneading your very own rustic loaf. And while the kitchen fills with the heavenly aromas of baking bread, we turn to the butter. Churn a creamy dairy spread from local Exmoor milk to complement your baked loaf. Then enjoy it together with a grazing board, which you have helped create. From £35pp.
Perfect for pasta lovers! Our pasta workshop takes culinary holidays to a whole new level. Indeed, Ben will teach you how to make fresh egg dough from scratch. Then you’ll turn it into two types of pasta; ribbon tagliatelle and filled ravioli. Here you will also learn to cook the pasta correctly, make a great sauce, and complete the day with a hearty pasta dish. A great excuse to pair with a beautiful Italian white wine! From £45pp.
Fabulous fish – curing and smoking
Learn the steps behind curing and smoking fish. Ben is a huge advocate of this process of preserving meat and fish. This traditional method adds depth of flavour and changes the texture of the flesh. Let Ben help you cure your own South West farmed salmon, then take it away to serve a delicious lunch and impress your friends and family. It’s a cooking weekend getaway like this that makes time out so memorable. From £60pp.
Scrummy sweet treats
This workshop is dedicated to those with a sweet tooth. We’ll create a dessert composed of three tasty elements. Ben has designed this half day session to be fun and casual. You’ll follow a simple step-by-step process to create a delicious and beautifully presented dessert. You will also make some truffles to enjoy with a coffee or tea at the end of the workshop. From £45pp.
Cooking with kids
Designed with families with children in mind, we have two options. For those with small ones, Ben will show you all how to make the perfect pizza base, and then let you decorate it with your favourite toppings. And for those of you living with mini-MasterChef’s, he’ll help you make fresh pasta and sauce. Both are fun ways to cook up a meal to be enjoyed together. Children must be accompanied by an adult. £20pp
Also ideal for kids, take a look at our Sugar Paste Cake Decorations workshop – bringing animals to life in icing!
