DIY Scented Candle Making Class in your Cottage
Our in-cottage candle making class shares with you the professional techniques to design, scent, and wick position your very own. Welcome to the art of candlemaking!
Many of us burn them throughout the year to fragrance our homes, and to create a lovely ambience. But have you ever wondered how to make them yourself? In this half-day session, exclusive to Exmoor Character Cottages guests, chandler (candle maker) Ellie will teach you the basics. By the end of the morning or afternoon, you’ll have your own beautiful handmade creation. You’ll also receive a complimentary wax melt from her own collection to take home with you.
Unique fragrances mixed just for you
We’re really excited that in this fun candle making workshop you’ll be able to choose a fragrance that reflects your favourite smells. Ellie will speak to the group beforehand to understand your scent preferences. She’ll bring along the right perfumes to help you create that aroma. Imagine burning yours at home and breathing in the fragrance as it fills your rooms.
Cruelty-free and vegan, too!
Ellie uses soy wax, which is natural, vegan and cruelty-free. You’ll be crafting a 30cl candle in a glass jar. We’ve factored in drying time too, so whatever time of day you finish on Saturday, they are ready to transport when you head home.
A candle making class for bridal showers and special parties
Anything handmade is super special to the recipient because it is made with love. This makes our workshop an ideal activity for brides and bridesmaids who want to make their own wedding decorations; for anyone planning a special party with customised favours; for those who want to craft a very special gift for a celebration; and for anyone who wants to be able to give simply gorgeous, individual presents to friends and family.
A fun and social candle making workshop
In this three-hour candle making workshop, Ellie will talk you through the process step-by-step, bringing all the equipment along. She’ll even clear up, so all you need to do is pay attention and get creative! Once the candle making workshop finishes, there’s time to enjoy a celebratory glass of fizz while you admire everyone’s creations. So, why not spend a morning or afternoon with your friends and family and learn a skill from a professional? It’s also perfect as a wet weather or winter activity. These workshops are suitable for sensible older children and young adults. We just ask an adult to accompany each due to the nature of the raw materials which are hot.
Quick Trivia: What is a chandler
Just like Archer, Baker, Brewer, Butcher, Carter, Cooper, Cook, Dyer, Farmer…the surname (or first name if you’re a ‘Friends’ fan) ‘Chandler’ indicates that family made candles at some point in their past. The word comes from the old French word chandelier. This in turn derives from the Latin word ‘candela’ for candle which itself comes from the Latin ‘candere’, which means bright.
How to book your candle making class
For a minimum of four, Ellie runs sessions on a Saturday. As such, there’s plenty of time for them to set before you leave. The price for the three-hour session, with materials, tutorial and a glass of bubbly (or non-alcoholic alternative) is £50 each. Whichever fragrance you choose, Ellie will give you a customised cotton dust bag to protect it on your journey home. You’ll receive a complimentary wax melt worth £5.99 and a 10% discount code for purchases direct from Ellie’s company, Karaka & Co. The workshop will take place at your Exmoor Character Cottage. All you need to do is bring your favourite apron if you have one and get creative!
