Farm Pony Rides – Horsing Around For All The Family
If you’re looking for something a little different to do when on holiday in our cottages, why not head out on some farm pony rides. It’s sure to make for a memorable outing!
Get up close to an Exmoor pony
You’ll all have a fantastic time horsing around at the Exmoor Pony Centre in Dulverton. They cater to pony rides for kids and the whole family. If you’re an animal lover or just want to find out about the Centre’s work with this endangered rare breed, then book a visit when you stay at Exmoor Character Cottages. To hear more listen to the Centre’s Linzi Green’s talking with Lucy and David at the Exmoor Pony Centre in July 2021.
Riding sessions and ‘pony parties’
Children will enjoy seeing the young foals and adult ponies, and there are riding sessions for competent riders over the age of 11 and by prior arrangement. The Centre also has an area available to hire for ‘pony parties’ where children can interact and ride on the ponies. These parties cost from £90 for a minimum of four children and then £12 per child for a maximum of 10 participants. Riding is suitable for all abilities, with a minimum age limit of four. Riding hats are provided by the Centre. There is a lot to do for children and adults alike, including:
- Taster sessions
- Pony trekking across the moor
- Pony paddocks
- Covered riding arena
- Pony petting pens
Experience Exmoor on an Exmoor pony
Day pony trekking across the moor is one of the most requested types of farm pony rides. The experience of riding these special ponies across the open landscape with glimpses of free-living herds is one not to be missed. These sessions vary from two to three hours and cost from £50 person and for up to six people. Riders get to groom and tack their pony, and an experienced guide leads the treks. Available between February and October.
Adopt or foster an Exmoor pony
The Moorland Mousie Trust run the centre and care for the ponies and foals that arrive from the moor. To date, more than 500 ponies have been cared for and re-homed by the dedicated staff and volunteers.
The Visitor Centre has developed programmes for adopting or fostering a pony to help with re-homing. Adopting an Exmoor pony costs from £24 per year to help with the pony’s upkeep. You will receive regular updates, and the ponies love attention, so you can arrange to visit when you come to stay at Exmoor Character Cottages!
