Boutique Holiday Cottages
● The Oval Dunster
● Pilgrim Corner
● Stone Barn
● The Old Sweet Shop
There are so many amazing boutique cottages to rent in the UK, but we know we’re particularly blessed to own and share these four very special luxury retreats. To have so many loyal guests who return year in, year out to holiday with us is a real privilege. But before we tell you more about our boutique holiday cottages, it’s important to firstly shine some light on the wonderful link to all our properties… Exmoor.
Why we love Exmoor
We really do. It’s a beautiful and often overlooked part of the country. As a guest once wrote in a Visitors’ Book, “We asked ourselves why we had driven past Somerset for years when everything we wanted and more was here.”
Things to see and do in Exmoor
To one side is the sea and inviting beaches, to another purple heather humming with bees on the moor.
Exmoor Character Cottages – how it all began
With a degree in history, a passion for property and interiors and a love of Exmoor, buying the Grade II listed cottage “The Oval” in Dunster as a weekend bolthole seemed a natural move. So, in 2008 the purchase took place and the loving restoration began! I was very quickly seduced by the thrill of restoring (and, in some cases, rescuing) these old buildings soaked in history. Sharing them with appreciative guests from all over the UK, and indeed the world is a joy.
A labour-of-restoration love – The Old Sweet Shop
The Old Sweet Shop called for a major refurbishment project using ancient techniques such as lime plastering and thatching alongside the new. Every radiator, tap, floor covering and light is new – but you’d never know it. Restored and preserved, we want people to enjoy these special, boutique holiday cottages along with the breathtaking region.
● Buy quality furniture
● Stock the kitchens as we would at home
● Invest in good quality linen and towels, beautiful furnishings and top quality flooring
● Provide all the things you’d need – spare loo rolls, kitchen roll, even cling film and foil
We know the importance of going the extra mile to delight our guests, and those who return receive extra special treatment. We design and furnish the interiors with our visitors’ various needs in mind, hoping they will enjoy one boutique holiday cottage so much they’ll want to try another.
Child-friendly premium accommodation
All our cottages are child friendly, not only from a safety perspective but with toys, books and games for all ages. We cover ponds, provide bannisters and railings, travel cots and stair gates. Steps have handrails, windows have child locks. Our luxury holiday cottages in Exmoor are perfect for the whole family.
Dog-friendly gold-star accommodation
With so many guests bringing their dogs, we put a little something on the welcome tray for them – after all, it’s their holiday too! We also provide doggie blankets, towels, baskets and food bowls. In fact, some dogs even leave comments in our guest books! This is certainly a premium, quality holiday for all.
Our boutique cottages to rent are rated annually by VisitEngland during rigorous inspections.
The feedback from our guests is extremely valuable to us, and that’s why we are delighted to have over 250 five-star reviews on TripAdvisor where each cottage has its own page.
We are also proud that in 2023 we once again received the Customer Choice Award from lettings agency Awaze for all four cottages. This accolade is the result of the average scores of 12 months of guest feedback to the independent review site Reevoo from verified customers. Less than 10% of their 60,000 properties are awarded this quality mark. Pilgrim Corner has received this award continuously since 2017 when we first listed with the agency. Our three other properties have also received the award annually since their listing.
Our other awards include a Gold in the Bristol Bath and Somerset Awards 2022, Silver in the South-West Tourism Awards 2022, Best Historical Cottage for The Oval Dunster, Plastic Free Exmoor and Surfers Against Sewage for our environmental efforts.
Supporting our local Exmoor economy
We’re delighted that visitors to our boutique holiday cottages bring essential income to an area of West Somerset that struggles economically vis-a-vis the rest of the UK. We encourage everyone to shop and eat locally as well as visit the local sites when they are here and thank you for doing so. In 2021 we launched our own podcasts. During these interviews we shine a light on local producers, tourism heroes, activities for our guests and the history and nature of Exmoor. We hope these will also help us do our bit to promote the economy of this beautiful National Park which is heavily reliant on tourism.
We are sure you will enjoy any one of our boutique holiday cottages to rent here in Exmoor, and we can’t wait to welcome you.
