Stargaze at Pilgrim Corner or The Old Sweet Shop during the Exmoor Dark Skies Festival, October 2020
Exmoor’s annual Dark Skies Festival runs from 16th to 31st October in 2020. It’s a stellar reason to stay for a week or short break at our luxury self-catering cottages; Pilgrim Corner or The Old Sweet Shop in Minehead. During the Festival we have four stargazing evenings with astronomer and artist Tim Wetherell exclusively for our guests. This is an experience for all the family – whether young or old!
Tim will come to the cottage in the early evening ready to amaze you with the wonders of the universe. If it’s a clear night, you’ll go outside and peer through his telescope. If it’s cloudy, he’ll share the secret of the galaxies in a fireside chat in your cottage. Tim customises the discussion for the audience, so it doesn’t matter whether you know about astronomy or are a complete novice like most of us. Whichever it is, you can’t help but be entranced by hearing about the stars, which most of us can’t see very well because we live with light pollution. At Pilgrim Corner or The Old Sweet Shop, you can see thousands of stars on a clear night – just like people who lived in the thatched cottages when they were built in the 1600s.
You can stay for two, three or seven nights from 16th or 17th October, or seven nights from 23rd October. Each cottage sleeps up to eight people, we accept two dogs, and both cottages have a hot tub and cosy wood-burning stove. So, you’ll be in the lap of luxury as you look up to the dark skies above and gaze at the starry, starry nights.
Our guest David who attended our 2019 event said: “Wow, I wasn’t expecting that. I was amazed by Tim’s talk and to go outside and see the stars above us and understand more about them was simply fascinating. I’d really recommend it; we were a very mixed party, and everyone was raving about the evening.”
